Beautiful, sunny Freiburg... a city which boasts the most sunny days in all of Germany. (According to meteorological statistics, the city is the sunniest and warmest in Germany and holds the German temperature record of 40.2 °C (104.4 °F))
I loved it before I even saw it...
and I have to say, Freiburg did not disappoint. We left with the thought that we could easily spend more time in this charming city...

Our hotel was by far my favorite that we have stayed in so far in Europe. It was clean, modern, and best of all had a cute, sunny balcony...

hotel bed, pretty standard for Europe- 2 twins complete with separate blankets |

Der Junge and Hund with the Bächle (this is der Junge's new go-to pose) |
Freiburg is famous for it's little canals that run throughout the city on nearly every street and alleyway. Freiburg is actually one of the few remaining towns to have this system of canals. They are called Bächle (from the German "Bach" meaning stream) and are sunken into the pavement which, as documented from the 13th century, originally provided the city with water for animals and helped to serve as a water supply to put out fires. They were originally larger and in the center of the streets but with the population increase in the 19th century they were considered hazardous for cars and in 1852 were moved to the edges. The local superstition is that if you accidentally fall/step into the Bächle, you will marry a Freiburger.

An original Bächle, in the center of the street, check out the alligator sculpture in the water! |

The Freiburg Münster (cathedral)! |
Like many of the cities that we have visited now, Freiburg also has its own tales of woe from the WWII era. Over 80% of the town was levelled in a short 20 minutes of air bombardment. The Freiburg Münster was fortunate to come out relatively unscathed while most of the Altstadt (old town) is actually new, having been rebuilt post-WWII.

Nächste Halt, Colmar, France...
Tanya, the city does look like Disney World...I thought the pictures were fake, but I do know how good a photographer you are. How beautiful! I would love to visit there...the town looks so clean and peaceful. How far a ride is it from your home? Maybe Kiwi's pose was inspired by Brian's James Dean...oh, so cool!
